An explosion connected with Watson Grinding & Manufacturing Co. killed two people early in the morning on Friday, January 24, 2020. A massive explosion was reported at about 4:20 a.m. at Watson Valve Services near the intersection of Gessner and Clay Roads.
The city’s fire department says at least one person has been hospitalized due to the incident. Local hospitals have reported at least 18 people checked in or visited an emergency room for injuries caused by the Houston building explosion.
Nearby homes sustained significant damage, with several of them moved off of their foundations. Debris from the explosion is being collected as far away as a quarter-mile from the explosion site.

Residents living near the blast site have reported significant damage to their homes and property, with locals describing the aftermath in the neighborhood as a “warzone.”

Damage from the explosion is extensive — windows and garage doors were destroyed, and roofs and walls collapsed from the aftershock. No indications of terrorism or arson have been found, but authorities are investigating for these causes.
A local shelter was set up nearby to accommodate those affected by the blast, and a few nearby elementary schools were shut down for the day.
